Variation of Intestinal Activity with Age: A Review **

چکیده

From the day of birth to the time of death, nearly all of the body's nutritional requirements are met by absorption from the intestinal lumen. However, the morphology and function of this absorbing membrane are not constant ; they vary with age. The origin of such changes, and their relationship to all of the events that we associate with biologic aging, is as yet uncertain. Studies in this field are of more than passing interest, for they probably hold clues as to how the alterations can be modified. The present discussion of the variation of intestinal activity with age introduces recent experimental findings from this laboratory, as well as a compilation of literature data. Although a comprehensive picture cannot be drawn, some generalizations begin to emerge which may serve as a baseline for later comparisons. Particular mention is made of the effects on the intestine of modalities which have been shown to alter the aging process (particularly dietary changes and ionizing radiation). Intestinal alterations are conveniently described as a function of the chronological age of the animal. This useful yardstick must not hide our lack of comprehension of the underlying mechanisms. For example, altered flora, dietary changes, and increased weight are all possible participants in intestinal changes shown by a weaning animal. Several experimental tools have recently become practical and might be used with advantage to separate some of these variables. Thus, pathogen-free and germ-free animals are available and may be employed to determine the role of bacteria in gut changes.' Initial studies have been made on overfed (and, hence, "weight aged") animals,2 and these could be followed by investigations of corresponding intestinal alterations. Conversely, animals given balanced but calorically limited diets (a technique introduced by McCay)`' and kept "weight young" will be useful subjects for studies on the relationship of weight to the stimuli initiating gut alterations.

Heterogeneity of the Level of Activity of Lgr5+ Intestinal Stem Cells

Intestinal stem cells (ISCs) are a group of rare cells located in the intestinal crypts which are responsible for the maintenance of the intestinal homeostasis and intestinal regeneration following injury or inflammation. Lineage tracing experiments in mice have proven that ISCs can repopulate the entire intestinal crypt. It is noteworthy that in such experiments, only a subset of intestinal cr...

Changes of digestive enzymes activity in Caspian Kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) during larval developmental stages

The ontogenesis and specific activities of pancreatic (trypsin, chymotrypsin, amylase and lipase) and intestinal enzymes (alkaline phosphatase, aminopeptidase N) were investigated in Kutum (Rutilus frisii Kutum) from the onset of exogenous feeding (3 day after hatching, DAH) to the juvenile stage at 50 DAH. Trypsin- and chymotrypsin-specific activity showed similar patterns and increased with l...

Effects of Dietary Mannan-Oligosaccharides and Phytase Supplementation Alone or in Combination on Growth Performance, Serum Metabolites, Cecal Microbiota Activity and Intestinal Morphology in Broiler Chickens

This study evaluated the effect of a combination of mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) and microbial phytase (MP) on growth performance, some blood biochemical metabolites, intestinal morphology and cecal microbial population of ROSS 308 broiler chickens from d 0 to 35 of age. A total of 200 one-dayold broiler chickens (mixed sex) were randomly distributed into four treatments with five replicates a...

The effects of non-starch polysaccharides content of wheat and xylanase supplementation on the intestinal amylase, aminopeptidase and lipase activities, ileal viscosity and fat digestibility in layer diet

The effects of non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) content of wheat and xylanase supplementation (XS) of the diet, on intestinal enzyme activity (amylase, aminopeptidase and lipase), fat digestibility and ileal viscosity of laying hens has been studied. Two hundred forty Hy-Line W-36 layer from 20 to 25 week of age were studied under a factorial experiment (4×2) in completely randomized design with...
